Meet Angelica — a small, beautiful blue smooth coat Chihuahua. She may be a senior, but she still has a huge personality and zest for life!
Angelica is a former CRT dog who was returned when her owner could no longer care for her. She was well-loved during the years she was with her adopter, so she is a wonderful, loving companion. Very sad when she first arrived at her foster home with another dog from her former home (Nano), Angelica would sometimes sit and softly howl. She stayed close to Nano, and always made sure he came back in if he was outside. Yet despite her world being turned upside down, Angelica immediately picked up the routine at her foster home, never had an accident in the house, and let her foster mom pick her up and comfort her from day one.
Well, Angelica’s sad days are now far behind her! Despite being sight compromised in one eye (the result of an injury that was never treated) and having knees that sometimes cause her back legs to give out, nothing slows Angelica down. She is a little firecracker! Sometimes when she is let out of her crate (she is crated during the day while her foster mom is at work and to sleep overnight), she shoots out of it like her tail is on fire! When her back legs do give out, she gets right back up and keeps going.
She does struggle some on really slick floors, but has no problem on the tile floors in her foster home. (Gripper socks should help her on slick floors.) Her foster mom carries her up and down the stairs in the house. She can hop up on her favorite dog cot which is elevated off of the floor (she also likes snuggling in her bed with a blanket). Her compromised eye seems to not hinder her as she has no problem navigating around the house, though it stresses her if strangers reach for her from the side where she can’t see them.
Angelica loves to sniff around outside and go for walks if you go at a slow pace (her tail wags the whole time). She does need to be picked up to go up or down steps or a curb. Angelica also loves to go places in the car, and gets excited when her foster mom gets her carrier out. She does well with new people and dogs she meets.
Angelica gets a daily supplement to help her joints and with inflammation, and eats a high quality, grain free kibble. Crated for her meals, she eats her eighth of a cup of kibble with gusto and then makes sure the bowl is licked clean! She sits quietly in her kennel until all her foster siblings have finished eating. Angelica also loves small treats (both crunchy and soft) and appropriately sized dental chews. She even enjoys baby carrots!
Generally quiet, Angelica will bark to let you know it’s time for a meal or to tell you she would like to be picked up (or to fuss at you if you come home late from work). She quickly quiets down once her needs are met. Yet as much as Angelica loves to be held and give you kisses or be brushed, if you need to focus your attention away from her, she never protests and is happy to go lay further down the sofa or in her bed.
Angelica has stolen her foster mom’s heart with her sweet, loving personality and great attitude – she is an incredible little dog! She deserves a calm, loving, all adult home that has the time, patience and resources to dedicate to her so that she can live out her golden years in the best way possible. Senior dogs like Angelica make wonderful little companions!
