Meet Luna. Luna is such a sweet puppy. She will be looking for her forever family soon. Her vet work will be completed in mid-May, and she will be ready for adoption at that time. We are accepting applications now!
On January 14th, CRT got an emergency phone call from the Everman TX Animal Shelter. They had picked up a stray pregnant Chihuahua, and she was beginning to give birth to puppies at the shelter. The shelter is no place for new puppies with no immune system. Additionally, this was the day the ice storm that was heading towards Dallas. Our CRT volunteers rushed to Everman (about 1 hour and 15 minutes) and picked up the mom, and all her newborn puppies. There were EIGHT puppies when she was done. We gave them names from the Harry Potter books and movies. Mama is “Molly” Weasley. The girls are “Luna” Lovegood and Moaning “Myrtle.” The boys are “Ron” Weasley, “Harry” Potter, “Hagrid,” “Draco” Malfoy, “Sirius” Black, and “Dobby.” Molly was an excellent mother to the puppies, and the puppies are all weaned now.
Luna is a fun loving and playful puppy. She is growing up with her siblings and mama Molly and adores them! Her personality is typical of a puppy. She is quite playful and has a high energy level, but she’s a little more reserved than her siblings. She loves tumbling with her siblings, playing with toys, tug-o-war, running through puppy tunnels and exploring! The puppies are quiet in their pen all night and wake up ready for breakfast and a puppy party. Luna’s morning routine (in this order) is: give kisses, eat breakfast, dance in the breakfast bowl, give more kisses, divebomb her siblings, play with toys, and crash for a nap. You can imagine how the rest of the day goes! These puppies are not shy and love everyone they meet. As puppies do, they will play until they drop and can often be found asleep in a puppy pile, inside their toy box! Luna craves human attention and will always leave the puppy game if people are available to cuddle and play with her! She’s not afraid to shout from the puppy pen when she wants some human attention. She will howl and cry if she’s the only puppy in the pen.
Luna is a clever pup and potties on washable, indoor potty pads. For the puppies’ health and safety, we wait to take them outside in the yard until they have two rounds of puppy vaccinations. Round 2 of shots will be completed soon, and then we can begin housetraining in the backyard. At night, the puppies sleep in a doggy pen with a big bed (and lots of soft blankets to wrestle on) and potty pad. Luna loves her family – she is a big snuggler and explorer.
The perfect home for Luna would be one with high activity. Luna would enjoy another small dog to grow up with! She is currently fostered along with 2 of her siblings, and she feels lonely when they are not with her. Luna also needs a family who can check on her every 4-6 hours (would not be a good fit for a family that works 10-12 hour days). She would be great in a home where there’s plenty of activity and people are home a lot. She has a human teenager in her foster home that she adores, and she loves playing with the elementary-aged neighbor kids who come over to visit. So, we think that Luna would do well with older, mature children (10 and older).
Luna was born on January 14, 2024. She is about 5 pounds and is growing as a puppy. Her mom (Molly) is about 14 pounds. We completed a DNA test on one of the puppies, and the results came back as follows: 67% Chihuahua, 6% Miniature Schnauzer, 5% Dachshund, 5% Poodle (Toy and Miniature), 4% Pekingese, 3% Beagle, 3% Chow Chow, 2% Australian Cattle Dog, 2% Chinese Crested, 2% Pomeranian and 2% Shih Tzu. Because of the size of her mom, we guess that Luna will weigh 10-15 pounds when fully grown. Luna has a beautiful pale cream coat which seems to be getting wispy, longer hairs coming in. Her lopped ears are adorable. Luna also has deep amber eyes. She is just as sweet as she in beautiful.
