Introducing BJ. This guy is gentle and sweet. He is looking for a forever home to grow up in.
In late February 2023, Chihuahua Rescue & Transport was contacted about helping with an emergency situation involving Chihuahuas located about two hours outside of Dallas. An elderly woman had passed away alone in her home. She had no family and left behind 15 Chihuahuas living in deplorable conditions in her backyard. CRT rushed into action and saved all 15 Chihuahuas. BJ was one of these Chihuahuas.
As we began vet work, we discovered that 10 of the 15 Chihuahuas had heartworms. Obviously the owner had not been giving them prevention. So we began the long and costly heartworm protocol on each of these Chihuahuas. BJ was one of the ones with heartworms. The great news is that he did very well during his treatment and is 100% healthy now and ready for adoption.
Because of his lack of socialization, BJ came to us with few social skills in regards to humans. He has improved his skills in these few months in foster care and we are so encouraged. BJ will look you in the eye now, whereas before he always looked down like he was used to only seeing human feet. BJ trusts his foster parents and will hang around them and even occasionally approach them while they are sitting down. Apparently he was never picked up in his original home, and is therefore extremely uncomfortable being picked up. We have gone from being so scared while being picked up and held that he would lose his bowels to now trusting that being picked up isn’t that scary. His foster family tries to incorporate him with us on the couch but he had never seen one before, so he launches off as soon as you let go of him. As his foster mom, having dealt with many dogs like this, his new home will need to understand that he will be a work in progress his whole life. His ability to learn to trust you will be the first thing to work on. The great news about him is that he has never tried to bite anyone, even at the vet clinic. He is most comfortable with other dogs, and will need at least one other dog in the home for him to be with. He may revert back to how he was in the beginning but it should be temporary.
BJ loves to play with the other dogs in his foster home. He came from a big family of dog siblings and other dogs make him comfortable! And BJ loves toys! That warms our hearts because he never had toys in his original home!
BJ is a smart and sweet dog, just undersocialized. He is mostly housebroken and will use a doggie door and also pee pads. BJ is not a big barker. He is not leash trained because he would not be able to understand the concept without a lot more work. So transporting him in a carrier is the only option when going somewhere. He travels great in a crate as we have taken him on a 4 hour drive to our getaway place.
BJ is about 5 years old and has many happy years ahead. He weighs about 9 pounds and is fully grown. BJ has a beautiful cream coat. We love his ears, and his deep brown eyes.
The ideal home for him will have at least one other little dog for him to play with and people who are patient and willing to accept his limitations but at the same time teach him as much as they can. Due to his shy nature, we recommend an all adult home, or a home with older mature teens. BJ doesn’t need a big home or a fancy car. Please, if you have a heart, give BJ a chance.
We are looking for an experienced small dog family who can see the potential in him, and will love him through the process.
