This is Layla!
Layla is a chihuahua mix who came to CRT when she was found running along the side of the highway in Virginia. Layla is black and white and about 7 pounds fully grown. She is believed to be around 7-8 years old. She is ready to meet her forever family!
Layla is shy in new environments and takes a day or two to feel safe, but after that she is curious and loves to explore! This little girl especially loves exploring in the yard outside and would love a home with a fenced yard where she can explore and play in the sun. Her foster family calls her their security guard because she has a habit of walking the fence perimeter at times and loves to bark at passersby! After about 2-3 days in her foster family’s home, she started to become quite playful. She runs around, does “Zoomies,” and loves grabbing toys– once she gets one, she doesn’t want to give it back!
Layla has nipped a few times and for this reason it is recommended she not go to a home with young children. She has gotten quite attached to her foster father and can be protective of him at times. She needs to go to a home where the adults can be firm with her and set boundaries regarding this type of behavior.
Layla seems to do well with crate training and has slept the night through in a crate at her foster home without issues, though she also loves to lay in bed with her foster parents and would adjust well to bed co-sleeping. Layla is also potty trained. She is always the first to the door when it’s time to go outside and is great at doing her business outdoors only.
Layla loves going for leash walks and gets so excited when you ask her if she wants to go for a walk. When you get the leash and harness out, she barks and runs around excitedly. However, she’s not the best walker- she gets so excited that she pulls on the leash and wants to run the whole way. So she could use some training there.
Layla does have 3 fused discs in her back that can cause flare ups occasionally. Right now she is on low dose gabapentin daily and doesn’t have any activity restrictions but if a flare occurs again, she may require activity restriction and more medication as directed by a vet.
Layla is a great eater and never misses meal times. She usually takes her gabapentin with her food without issue but if she doesn’t, her foster parents just put some peanut butter on them and she swallows them down without issue!
Layla is a sweetie and is waiting to share the love at her future fur-ever home! When you’re her person, she wants to be with you all of the time. She gets so excited when her foster father gets home from work and prioritizes him when he’s home but hangs out with her foster mom when dad isn’t home.
She is spayed, UTD on shots and on HW preventative.
Her adoption donation is $300.00.
