Meet Sirius. He’s a happy puppy with a huge heart. His vet work will be completed in mid May, and he will be ready for adoption at that time. We are taking applications now!
On January 14th, CRT got an emergency phone call from the Everman TX Animal Shelter. They had picked up a stray pregnant Chihuahua, and she was beginning to give birth to puppies at the shelter. The shelter is no place for new puppies with no immune system. Additionally, this was the day the ice storm was heading towards Dallas. Our CRT volunteers rushed to Everman (about 1 hour and 15 minutes) and picked up the mom, and all her newborn puppies. There were EIGHT puppies when she was done. We gave them names from the Harry Potter books and movies. Mama is “Molly” Weasley. The girls are “Luna” Lovegood and Moaning “Myrtle.” The boys are “Ron” Weasley, “Harry” Potter, “Hagrid,” “Draco” Malfoy, “Sirius” Black, and “Dobby.” Molly was an excellent mother to the puppies, and the puppies are all weaned now.
Don’t let his painfully cute puppy looks deceive you. Sirius is an intellectual. Here’s one cerebral canine. He’s quick to learn, always ready to explore, and can be found regularly giving the side-eye to his brother Dobby’s shenanigans. Like all puppies, Sirius plays
hard and sleeps well, but he’s most definitely alert to the world around him. You can pick up on both his curious nature and his gentle nature a mile away. His dining habits can be best described as leisurely and measured. Sirius regularly shows his softer side,
winning over his foster parents with an award-winning sad puppy face that gets him all of the snuggles.
Sirius is doing excellent with his potty training. He currently will potty on washable, indoor potty pads with only the occasional accident that can be easily managed. For his health and safety, we will wait to take him outside in the yard until he has had his second round of puppy vaccinations. (Round two of shots will be completed late March, and then Sirius will begin housetraining in the backyard.) At night, Sirius sleeps in a perfectly sized crate (attached to a much larger pen) snuggled with a soft blanket, his brother, and a few of his favorite toys.
Sirius is currently being fostered with his much more rambunctious brother Dobby. Based on his frequent interactions with Dobby, it seems that Sirius would likely enjoy another small dog to grow up with! Sirius regularly craves interaction with his foster humans and will need a family who can check on him consistently. (Sirius would not be a good fit for a family that works 10-12 hour days.) There are no children in his foster home, but we believe Sirius will do well with older, mature children (10 and older).
Sirius was born on January 14, 2024. He is right at 5 pounds and still growing. His mom (Molly) is about 14 pounds. We completed a DNA test on one of the puppies, and the results came back as follows: 67% Chihuahua, 6% Miniature Schnauzer, 5% Dachshund, 5% Poodle (Toy and Miniature), 4% Pekingese, 3% Beagle, 3% Chow Chow, 2% Australian Cattle Dog, 2% Chinese Crested, 2% Pomeranian and 2% Shih Tzu. Because of the size of his Mom, we guess that Sirius may eventually grow to weigh 10-15 pounds. Sirius has a beautiful tan coat, light brown eyes, and a ginger nose. He is simply adorable.
